I'll start by saying that I absolutely love Flash. When it comes to designing and developing interactive websites it's been my tool of choice from the time I started using it back in 2002 when it was a Macromedia product called Flash MX. I happily conitnued learning and working with it through version 8 and was really on board with the direction things went when Adobe took over Macromedia and wrapped Flash up in its Creative Suite of tools. The tighter integration of Flash with some of my other favorites like Photoshop and Dreamweaver in Creative Suite 3 really brought my workflow together. And although Flash was always at the top of many of my lists the one list that it never made its way to the top of was my system resource usage list. This list has forever been dominated by another member of the Creative Suite family. Photoshop. Yes, even on a system that was purpose built to perform under the demands of designing our latest websites and assembling the backends that would support them (along with the latest videos and games) Photoshop would regularly bring it crawling to a near halt when editing large and complex image files. But I was used to that and although it was a problem for me it was never enough of a problem that it became a headache.
You'll find them in most any forum or blog when the topics of Flash and
SEO collide and you can almost see them dancing as they go on to tell
you that you simply can’t optimize a full Flash website for search
engine indexing. They're the Flash haters and for probably no other
reason than their own self-preservation they'll jump on any opportunity
to bash Flash and its place in the world of web design and SEO.
I'm here to tell you that while these people may have been right at one
time, anyone that tries to tell you that it can't be done today is a
flat out liar. Not only can it be done, but it can be done seamlessly
and completely dynamically to allow a website with a front end built
entirely in Flash to enjoy all of the same benefits of being indexed as
its non-Flash competitor.
In the web design and development industry there aren't many names bigger than Adobe so when we were notified that they had selected Ward 11 Calgary as the Site of the Day Award Winner for October 14, 2008 we were beyond excited.....it's a huge honor.
We're happy to announce that our design for Ward 11 Calgary has been featured on Faveup. Faveup is a simple Gallery of Inspirational Design and we're honored to have one of our designs recognized in the Flash category.
Head on over to Faveup and show your support for us by casting your vote and don't forget to check out the website if you haven't already!
At 11:01 PM on Saturday September 13th, 2008, we launched ward11calgary.ca for City of Calgary Ward 11 Alderman Brian Pincott.
We were approached by Brian near the end of development of the Ward 10
project on a recommendation that we could deliver the type of website
that he was looking for. When we started this project we knew that
there were a few areas that we wanted to improve upon from a technical
standpoint. And there were a few new things that we have being wanting
to try out such as integration to some of the popular social websites
like FaceBook, Digg, and Delicious.
